President Trump ordered a naval blockade of all ships entering or leaving Iranian ports on the Arabian Gulf and Gulf of Oman, effective April 14, after ceasefire talks in Islamabad collapsed without a deal. The order also directs U.S. forces to interdict in international waters any vessel that has paid a toll to Iran.
Experts warn that the mission is difficult to sustain without a large, committed warship presence and carries a high risk of Iranian retaliation, including speedboat attacks on tankers or strikes against Gulf state infrastructure hosting U.S. forces. Iran's Revolutionary Guards warned that any military vessel approaching the strait would be considered a breach of the ceasefire.
The blockade targets roughly 20% of the world's oil supply and, if held, would eliminate Iran's primary point of economic leverage. But it introduces serious complications for ships carrying oil from China, India, and South Korea, raising the question of whether the U.S. would actually interdict vessels from major trade partners or strategic allies.
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced Saturday that unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs) would join the mine clearance effort in the Strait of Hormuz in the coming days, as guided-missile destroyers USS Frank E. Peterson and USS Michael Murphy completed an initial transit to set conditions for the operation.
The New York Times previously reported that Iranian forces were laying mines using small boats, and that Iran itself cannot account for the location of all the mines it deployed; CENTCOM commander Adm. Brad Cooper said the U.S. had begun establishing a new safe passage and would share it with the maritime industry. One platform likely to be involved is the Knifefish UUV, built by General Dynamics and designed to detect, classify, and identify buried and high-clutter mines while keeping the host vessel outside the threat area.
The mine countermeasures mission package, which reached initial operational capability in 2023 and was first deployed in 2025 aboard the USS Santa Barbara and USS Canberra, represents the Navy's most mature robotic mine-hunting system, though Littoral Combat Ships (LCS) were not listed among assets on the CENTCOM Operation Epic Fury fact sheet.

Boise, Idaho-based Talon Avionics has unveiled SECTR, an autonomous counter-unmanned aerial system (C-UAS) platform that uses AI-driven passive acoustic targeting to detect, classify, and intercept low-cost unmanned aerial systems (UAS), including first-person-view (FPV) drones, before they appear on conventional radar. The system's acoustic sensors detect motor signatures at up to 100 meters, while integrated radar extends awareness to 200 meters today and 1,000 meters by 2027.
SECTR is built around a modular interceptor station that scales to 100 launch tubes operated from a single control console, deployable on vehicles or in a static configuration for convoy protection, forward operating base defense, or critical infrastructure. The full detect-to-intercept sequence completes in under one second, with a stated single-interceptor hit probability of 95% or greater against drones up to 1 kilogram.
A key differentiator is the fully passive detection layer: unlike radar-dependent C-UAS systems, SECTR emits no signals and does not reveal the location of the protected unit, a critical advantage for forward positions and convoys. The company says the system is particularly effective against "sleeper drones" that are pre-positioned near terrain and activate only when vehicles or personnel approach.
